To stop Windows 10 from automatically downloading and installing updates, you can temporarily disable the Windows Update service. Here are the steps to do so safely:
- Open the Services window. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Type services.msc and press Enter. This will open the Services management console where you can control Windows services.
- Find the Windows Update service. Scroll through the list to locate Windows Update. It might also be named wuauserv. The list is alphabetical, making it easy to find.
- Stop the service. Right-click on Windows Update and select Stop. The status will change to Stopped. At this point, Windows will cease downloading or installing new updates.
- Prevent the service from restarting automatically. Double-click on Windows Update to open its Properties window. Under the Startup type dropdown, select Disabled. Click Apply and then OK. This action prevents the update service from starting again after a reboot.
Now, your Windows Update service is paused. You can continue working without interruptions from updates. However, keep in mind that disabling updates can leave your system vulnerable if left off for a long time. Remember to turn it back on when your troubleshooting is complete or if you want to install updates for security and stability.
To restart the Windows Update service later, go back to the Services window, find Windows Update, right-click, and select Start. If you previously disabled the startup type, modify it back to Automatic or Manual to resume updates seamlessly.
Note: Stopping and disabling the update service should only be a temporary measure. If update issues persist or if security is at risk, consider additional troubleshooting or consulting support professionals to resolve underlying problems.
