VK is a Russian social networking site. It has similar features to Facebook but its interface is more simple and intuitive. Vkontakte (which translated to English means In Contact) was originally designed for university students only since 2007 it also includes all ages people. A lot of teenagers use this network to talk with their friends and share stuff, most popular are photo sharing and live streaming videos (similar to Facebook). And yes now it’s the biggest social network in Russia after Facebook so please don’t ban Vk hello! We want to play Dota here! 😀

How much do you pay for a contract?

I can’t disclose the exact number – sorry guys. Mostly 2-3 million US dollars, sometimes more.

What’s the payment schedule? when you get it and how much does that include (advance/month)?

Again I can’t tell exact numbers but generally, we get paid twice a year and it includes all tournament winnings including online tournaments, LANs, qualifiers for majors. We also have some bonuses system to award best players like XMG Captain’s Pick – if FNG or RTZ play in Solo mid, RTZ gets a bonus of $500 per win from XMG. So far he has earned $300K this way 🙂 In addition, we have specific bonuses for each player based on performance and they are distributed after the contract ends. For example, FNG had a “bonus pool” of $125K (or around $10K per month), players have different bonuses.

What is the share of prize money for you as an organization?

We take 30% of the total wage package which equals 10% of winnings so about 2,5% from tournament winnings and 5-10% of all sponsor money. This includes salary share – 50% of the prize pool – it’s our salary for 4 months :). Please note that we pay team salaries even if players don’t get any amount from tournament prizes. The big part comes from sponsorship deals with companies like XMG, SteelSeries, etc. In addition, we help the Dota2 community financially by supporting the “Dota2 Russian Federation” project ($25 000 in total) set up and maintain my a good friend and colleague of mine Bogdan Burlacu.

What is the approximate cost to you?

We pay salaries for 4 months upfront (so twice a year), so extra expenses are just traveled costs, some online qualifiers, and maybe a couple of LAN qualifier flights paid by us (which can be a few thousand dollars depends on the number of teams that need to travel). In addition, we pay out bonuses which depend on performance as I mentioned above – this covers remaining prize pool money from total winnings. So it’s pretty low cost at the end – but note these are large numbers we’re talking about here :)!

How did ASUS ROG Dreamleague start? What does ASUS being involved bring to the table?

The league started with TheGDStudio asking me to help them out in Dota2, we had a great time together during our show and I think they liked working with me so they asked if we want to stay in touch and do some kind of tournament. So when they came up with the concept of ASUS ROG Dreamleague I thought it was something unique that hasn’t been done before – online events have huge potential but there are only a few good ones that provide real entertainment value for fans. So we decided to join forces :)! We have the same passion for Dota2 and gaming in general so it’s fun for me as well as a useful learning experience. Our projects usually involve a lot of new things to test (for example this league is the first tournament in which all teams get their own house, so it’s a test as well. We also need to see if this format works for us and fans). ASUS brings name value and money – they’re a huge company with lots of contacts that can help us make this league really professional.

How much work goes into building something like DHD?

A lot! And we have some delays (which are mostly caused by me) but overall we have done a really good job I would say. Our hardworking team makes sure games are played on time, there are no cheating and production is up to standards. It requires a lot of manpower from them – during the league, they were online 24/7 making sure everything went smoothly.

Do you know if Valve is planning something similar to this?

It’s hard to say, they have their own plans for the future and I can’t share them but rest assured there will be big changes in how tournaments are organized and delivered. They’re very interested in involved sponsors and bringing online/LAN experiences together. For me personally, DotaTV is an important milestone that will change everything on how we watch streams at home – I’m really looking forward to it! To sum up – yes they do plan something and competition is a good thing here so let’s wait for their decisions :).

Are you already thinking about Dota2 TI4 or focusing completely on DHD We’re focused almost completely on DHD – TI4 and future plans are not yet announced.

How do you think the industry will look like in 1-2 years?

It’s pretty hard to say but I believe that online broadcasts will get better, more teams (and players) will focus on gaming as a job and fewer of them will look for excuses or try to evade paying taxes. The number of events each year should decrease by 20-25% with stronger events gathering more viewers and higher budgets thanks to sponsors involved with teams directly as well as event organizers getting the bigger part from sponsorship deals. In addition, we’re expecting some really interesting things from Valve which should revolutionize how we watch streams at home. My hope is also that Dota TV gives us stats showing what’s really happening – for me games are hard to watch because I don’t know if they’re fun. Now it should be possible to see how viewers react to certain plays and whether teams have lead or not.

Thanks a lot for the interview!

My pleasure :)! Thanks again for hosting Eizo Cup and I hope we can do this together in the future with a bigger prize pool of course :).

As I was looking forward to this event many times during last year when there were not ASUS ROG DreamLeague and I was wondering when someone will make something similar to The Defense, I can’t believe how fast is everything going. I’ll just link the thread here so you can check it out. A week has passed since DreamHack Dota 2 Invitational started and we now have a full recap of everything that happened there 🙂 More than 50 000 people watched this event while it was live on stream, against all expectations lots of tournaments are today behind us and players fought each other very hard in order to win this prize pool of almost $35 000. 16 teams from Europe were fighting there for 6 spots at offline finals where another 6 teams were waiting for them. 8 of these teams got the chance to fight each other in front of a massive live audience on DreamHack Winter 2013 and now we know all the details about this tournament as well! I’ll just link the thread here so you can check it out. http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/dota-2-tournament…tack-2014

If I would guess I’d see Mousesports as one of the most likely winners but they are facing Natus Vincere first so it’s not gonna be easy. We’ll probably know more about teams after watching their games on DreamLeague. Ok, now time to finally announce the final lineup for ASUS ROG DreamLeague! Online qualifiers are already over and we can finally say that all 8 teams that will be fighting there at DreamHack Winter 2013 have their slot secured. Some of them had a really hard road already, while some of them didn’t even get to play any game due to various reasons (2nd and 3rd team from last season is directly invited). So if you missed the online action where teams were fighting each other for those tickets, then you
