The only thing we retain after deletion is an anonymized identifier in our records, which we use to enforce our commenting rules. We do not store any personal information on this anonymized ID and the only way for us to access this ID is through a valid login session where a user must click on “forgot username/password” and then enter their registered email address or phone number which will generate a unique key. This way we can enforce rules about what users are allowed to say on our site.

You’ll need your login credentials: email address and password. You won’t be able to use the “forgot username/password” if you only know one of those fields but not both. You will also have the option to sign up for two-factor authentication when you first create an account with Reddit (and it is always recommended!). What happens to my Karma and Comments post history?

When you delete your account, there will be an entry in the records of our databases stating that you have deleted your account, which is visible only to us for enforcing our rules (i.e., if we see a comment from an anonymous “user” with very low karma whose most recent activity has been deleting their own account, then we can know for sure that this was intentional). Any content associated with that username will no longer appear on Reddit once they delete it. However, as long as someone has an archived version of a webpage or other historical record, you may still appear in them.

When you delete your account, all subreddits that you are subscribed to will no longer show up on the homepage or individual subreddit pages for logged-in users who are not subscribed to that particular subreddit. This is so that only links from active subreddits appear on these areas of Reddit. Subreddits still exist after an account has been deleted but any posts or comments made by the user since they last visited a subreddit (as recorded by our web servers) may be removed if moderators of the specific subreddit choose to do so.

Unfortunately, we can’t give advance warning about this because it would defeat one of the major benefits of having a separate profile page and post history per user – which is to have more control over the content that you post. If people knew what comments would be automatically deleted or subreddits a user was subscribed to before they hit “post”, users might feel like they are being censored if they try to post something else and it gets removed.

The only exception to this policy is for private subreddits (which appear as a category when you create an account). In these instances, all of your posts and comments will still remain on Reddit but no longer show up on the subreddit page. Also, keep in mind that Reddit has thousands of active communities with millions of subscribers total. Because we don’t have the ability to individually make exceptions for each regular or private subreddit, please review this before having an account deleted.

Can I delete my comments?

No. The only way to delete your comments is by deleting your account as described above. We do not keep backups of threads that include comments, so once something is posted there it’s basically there forever on Reddit (the content will still be timestamped and visible via google search or web archive). We are not able to delete these at all, even if you email us asking us specifically to remove one thread/comment in particular (for example, a comment you made about another user which you want to be removed because now the other user has found it and is harassing you). This policy is consistent with those of other social media sites.

What if I forgot to log out and someone else deleted my account?

Please email us at [email protected] immediately, along with a link to your profile (if you can find it) or the last place you remember being in Reddit after finding that your account has been deleted. We will review the available information and try our best to restore your account as quickly as possible – we may need proof of ID for this process, so please include this if you have it. If you are trying to recover an old account from more than 30 days ago (when the change was put into effect), we will be able to do this but it requires extra work on our end so please email us and be patient as we work with you to restore your account.
