- Click on the gear icon.
- Next to a conversation to open the Settings menu.
- Click “Delete conversation.”
- You’ll be asked to confirm that you want to delete the conversation permanently and, if you do so, it is deleted from your account.
Yes. It’s not possible to send a message which is 100% permanent, as the data will still hang around on a server somewhere and could be recovered by digital forensics experts. However, you can delete Facebook messages so that they are no longer available within your account – making them pretty much impossible to recover in 99% of situations. If someone else has screen-shotted or copied your messages before deletion, there may be a copy elsewhere but it would require considerable effort to find it.
How do I permanently delete Facebook Messenger messages?
To permanently delete specific or all conversations from both yourself and the other party’s accounts, click or tap on ‘Messages’ in the left hand menu then select ‘More’. This will display a list of all conversations. Next, click or tap on the ‘Trash can’ icon next to each conversation you want to delete and then select ‘Delete’. You’ll be warned that deleting specific conversations means that you will also lose any media (images) contained within them. If you’re sure you want to permanently delete messages from your account, select ‘Done’. The conversation will disappear forever – it’s no longer available in your Messenger Archive either.
Can I still see deleted Facebook messages?
Yes, but only if someone else has screen-shotted or copied the message before deletion. In this instance, the thread would still appear when viewing your own chat history but not the other person’s. However, even if someone was able to recover deleted messages from their own device, the content will still be unreadable as Facebook encrypts all chat data using a key it only has access to. Your messages are also encrypted when sent between your devices and Facebook’s servers so that nobody else can read them in transit.
How do I permanently delete entire conversations?
Facebook doesn’t currently provide an option for deleting entire conversations so you have to delete each individual message manually or run through them one by one selecting ‘More’ followed by ‘More’ then finally ‘Trash’. You can also select archive or mute at any stage if required. If you’re going through numerous older messages, it may be worth setting up a Chat List Filter first so they don’t clutter your Inbox. You can do this by clicking “More” in the left-hand menu and selecting “Filters”. You’ll then have to select the relevant chat filter and tap or click on ‘Create new rule’.
How do I permanently delete Facebook Messenger comments?
To permanently delete comments you’ve made within a conversation, open it up then hit ‘More’ followed by ‘Delete comment’. This will remove the message completely – similar to how deleting a Facebook status works. To permanently delete messages you’ve received from other people, go to their profile page and select ‘Messenger’, which will take you through to their content. From there you should be able to either mute them, unfriend them or report spam (if their messages are not spam) – there is no option to delete their comments though.
Can I permanently block people from Facebook Messenger?
Yes, you can either block someone from the chat screen or by going to their profile and selecting ‘Block’. Blocking them will also remove any existing messages in your inbox as well as making sure they cannot contact you through messenger again. It won’t affect other interactions such as wall posts or tagging each other in photos so if you want to completely cut off all ties with a person, this is the best way to do it. How do I permanently delete Facebook Messenger access for a specific device?
Facebook automatically logs out of Messenger on unauthorised devices so you won’t be able to message people from a device that’s not registered. To remove access from a specific device, open up Facebook Messenger and tap or click the settings cog in the top right corner then select ‘Manage’. From here you can see a list of devices authorised for messenger use – if you want to revoke access for an individual device, tap or click on it then select ‘Revoke Access’. Currently there is no option to completely remove messaging functionality for a particular device though so all future attempts at logging in will still be blocked.
What happens when I delete messages?
Deleted conversations are moved to the Messenger Archive where they are stored but will not appear during searches or timeline view. To view an archived conversation, open up Messenger then tap or click on ‘Archives’ and select which one you’d like to check. Archived conversations can be accessed by anyone for up to 90 days after they were last active but will be automatically deleted afterwards.

If you want to delete your profile forever it’s not quite that simple unfortunately. If you’re absolutely determined to go all out though it’s not impossible – log into your account then head to this help page .

How to Delete Read Facebook Messages?
If the message is already read, then unfortunately there is no way of deleting it. However, there are some ways that you can hide a particular conversation from your inbox or even unfriend the person. Here are three suggestions:
1) Unfriending Someone on Facebook will prevent all communication between the two of you and remove their name from your “People” section under the Settings tab. You won’t be able to see certain things like photos and posts that they make (depending on whether or not they have privacy settings set), but you will still be able to view public content such as a business page or group that belong to them.
2) You can use the “Unfollow” option on your own account to hide a conversation from your inbox. This way you won’t see any notifications, comments or messages in that particular thread. To unfollow yourself simply click here . The person won’t know you’ve unfollowed because they will still receive notifications for likes and comments you make on their content. If you want to follow again, just click “Follow” under your profile picture from any post where you see it with this icon:
3) Turn off notifications for certain people so that their conversations will no longer show up in your inbox as new, but only when they comment or like something that’s public. When the person goes to view their notifications, they won’t see anything from you.
In addition to the above options, there are two groups that exist on Facebook called “Permanent Delete Group” and “Unhide News Feeds” where people share their unique solutions for not seeing particular posts, friends or comments on their newsfeed. The best thing about joining these groups is that you can find other ways of permanently deleting content under the “Posts” section.
This is great if you want to completely cut someone off on Facebook. The groups are extremely helpful and have many different solutions for similar problems that people usually ask about. You can join them in order to delete a message from within your inbox or hide some content of the person’s profile without downloading any third-party applications.

Messages that you delete from your Facebook inbox are actually archived rather than being deleted, which means they’re in there and can’t be recovered. Once messages get archived on Facebook, they will never come back – so good luck if you send one by mistake!
