How To Restart / Reset A Language On Duolingo

Duolingo has a feedback page. You’re encouraged to leave comments, suggestions, or complaints here. The downside is that it will take several minutes for your post to be moderated and visible on their forum if at all. If you would prefer a faster reply, reach out to them via email ([email protected]) instead of leaving feedback on their public forum.

You may leave them an email to reset your account in case you’ve forgotten the password. However, they do not always respond within 24 hours so don’t expect it within the first day or two (some users have waited as long as a week). Be persistent when emailing Duolingo because sometimes they can get swamped with emails and other times some emails are simply blocked by the spam filter. It may take a couple of tries before one gets through.

update: Duolingo will now give you a text file that contains your username and password when resetting via email. Simply log in with this on their website instead of doing it on the mobile app which requires both codes!

also, I have created an online tool for offline brute force attacks (similar to what was done in this video) at www.duolingo4xp.the taka, use it at your own risk]

So I also had my account deleted out of nowhere as well. Here’s how I got back my account (and thus all my points). Hopefully, this is useful for some desperate people!

Reset your account. (You can use a tool I created that brute forces the password recovery page, but you’ll need to download a python 3 interpreter for Windows, Linux, or Mac.). You could also reset it through email support by providing them both your username and an ‘answer’ from one of your previously finished lessons. After doing either of those two things, the next step will be downloading the app again even if you choose not to make another account.

Download Duolingo again. What happens is that when you sign up for a new account using the same e-mail as one of your previous accounts then all lessons completed with points on that old deleted account will show up in your recent activity bar on top of the screen. So just download and log in with your e-mail and you shouldn’t have to redo a single lesson!

hey there, thank you for putting up this course! Even though it’s been abandoned by the OP, at least this way we still get to see what Duolingo’s biggest weaknesses are ๐Ÿ™‚ For my part, I’ll update what I can when I find time but please do keep contributing so that we can all benefit from these great tools.

(PS: I’ve opened up my own course here if you’re interested, it’s complementary to this one and focuses a lot more on grammar) (note: I am not affiliated with Duolingo, the original poster nor any other entity/person involved in the development and maintenance of this course.)… Hey there, thank you for putting up this course! I tried the Duolingo French course when it was first released in 2012, but decided that the mobile app wasn’t worth the time or effort, so I didn’t bother with it after a few lessons. When I decided to learn French again last month, I thought at least my old accounts would still be there waiting for me if memory serves correctly. As it turned out, even though my accounts were still present in their system as of last August, they have been deleted recently sometime between December 2016 and February 2017 without notice or explanation despite being over 10 days old at the beginning of February. Therefore, it seems that despite the fact I have made over 1200 different phrases in Duolingo prior to their latest update, they have decided those efforts were wasted and are gone forever without any explanation or warning.

These accounts might’ve been deleted for various reasons. In my case, however, it was quite possibly because of a bug introduced by some update last year. According to their own policy and behavior, this makes perfect sense since they will happily delete your account for any reason whatsoever without explanation just like what happened to me. The only problem is that this doesn’t make any sense from an end-user perspective; if you update your app/account and lose all progress as a result then there should at least be something clearly written somewhere indicating this could happen. If you lose your progress for any other reason which was not clearly indicated in their own policies then that is something else entirely (e.g., recovering an old account after making a new one with the same e-mail).

That said, Duolingo is obviously not responsible for the fact I lost my hard-earned advances; it makes perfect sense why they deleted them. The problem lies, however, with their lack of honesty and transparency regarding what happened to me and similar issues; if you didn’t make your intentions clear to begin with then people will naturally assume that the app is safe to use as long as you’re following its rules (which there’s no reason to suspect otherwise from my experience). is obviously not responsible for the fact I lost my hard-earned advances; it makes perfect sense why they deleted them. The solution would be a very simple one, so let’s get started:

1) Make sure all changes are announced in advance, preferably by means of an email sent a few days prior announcing any potential risks or losses such as losing existing progress due to an update or bug (even if it’s just a warning, it’s something). Email is usually the best way to reach users since most people don’t actively monitor forums like this one.

2) Make sure that your team of moderators actually pays attention to such announcements and behaves accordingly when appropriate instead of pretending they are oblivious. It would be nice if the moderators could at least delete forum threads that are over a year old when there hasn’t been any activity whatsoever (no posts or replies for over 6 months at least). I’m pretty sure none of us want our forum threads clogging up with useless pages that serve no other purpose than making searches slower and more difficult.

3) Finally, limit the maximum number of phrases you allow in each tree to about 40-50 per tree and give a clear explanation about it. This will solve the problem of slowing down forum threads with over 100 pages since users would be required to visit other trees or make new accounts for further progress; this is actually an excellent way to prevent cheating since it would require one to find someone willing to share his/her account or spend money on more Duolingo accounts (if you allow one-time codes).
