Closing your Etsy shop is the best way to get rid of all your open items and fulfill an order. Closing your shop can also be useful if you are struggling with fulfillment or shipping any orders that may have gone LATE, or if someone has been abusing your product listings.

As a seller, anytime you want to close your shop it will affect how customers see you in their search results. It’s important for sellers who plan on closing their shops to consider this as they decide when and how to use the “Close Shop” feature through their account settings. This article will walk you through the steps involved in closing out of your Etsy shop by canceling transactions, printing postage and giving final payment information for remaining orders.

CLOSING YOUR SHOP:

Before closing your shop, please read our Shop Announcement Guidelines which outline some best practices for when and how to announce you will be closing. Be sure to check the list of prohibited announcements so your post won’t get removed by Etsy’s staff.

In order to have a complete order, it is important that you cancel all your open orders before closing your shop from the Sell on Etsy app or Seller Hub . Canceling an order means that we are refunding the buyer their money and canceling any upcoming production on this item. If orders contain digital downloads, they will not be canceled since those downloads can continue to be fulfilled. You may need to print postage for items that haven’t been created yet in order to cancel the order.

Once you have canceled all your open orders, you can then close your shop by navigating to Shop Settings > Finances > Payment settings and selecting ‘Close my shop.’ After confirming, Etsy will provide information on what this means for both the seller and buyers of their shop. The monthly fees incurred for an Etsy store are paid by the 20th of each month, so closing a shop before this date is discouraged since it will result in additional costs being incurred. This will not affect existing transactions that were previously made or paid for.

Please note: Newly opened shops must remain open for at least four months before they can be closed from a mobile device using the Sell on Etsy app or Seller Hub . Orders cannot be canceled when closing a shop through a mobile device. Please see this article for more information about closing your shop from a computer.

Shop Announcement Guidelines

Please keep in mind that we will remove shop closing announcements if they don’t follow our guidelines:

– Etsy Shop Closings are not permitted within the first four months of opening a shop.

– Closing an active shop negatively impacts your placement in Etsy search results. We recommend waiting until your shop has been open for at least 4 months before closing it from your account (this is because newly opened shops must remain open at least four months before they can be closed from a mobile device).

– All orders, including custom items and digital downloads, must be canceled to close out of an account. Canceling an order may result in refunds to buyers and withhold payments from sellers. If you have any outstanding orders that were placed before you closed your shop, you are required to cancel them.

– Any outstanding fees at the time of closing will be charged to your payment account or credit card on file. We recommend that you process all relevant refunds and final orders before closing your account.

– You can still add items for sale from the Sell on Etsy app even after closing your account using desktop computer access (coming soon). Currently available in the US, UK, CA & AU.

– When contacting your bank about an unpaid transaction Etsy provides a link with instructions to reopen the shop. This link can also be found in Finances > Payment settings in Seller Hub . If a transaction is marked as completed/refunded it cannot be undone and will not reopen a shop.

– Orders containing digital items cannot be canceled when closing an account. Digital items may continue to be delivered after a shop is closed. If you wish to stop delivery of all and make sure that no more purchases are made, please use the appropriate method for your type of digital item:

– Customized digital downloads–they can only be downloaded once and we recommend deleting them from your computer after they have been fulfilled. We recommend placing non-customized versions in your shop for sale while they are fulfilling any customized ones you still need to fulfill and then deleting them as well. – Selling on Pattern by Etsy—digital patterns will automatically convert to instant download (so buyers will never receive their pattern) or physical (shipped) patterns (so buyers will receive their pattern but never the instant download version) if you delete them from your shop. Please contact us to discuss how to refund any outstanding purchases.

– Active subscriptions—please see our Help article on how to cancel a subscription . If we are able to stop the subscription, then you can choose not to renew it when it is up again. – Digital products sold as one-time listings–we recommend deleting these listings from your shop after they have been fulfilled or removing them from your shop and relisting them with a new variation of the item that cannot be gifted (and therefore isn’t a digital product).

– Etsy gift cards–are considered property and should not be returned if the shop closes. Please note: It may take up to three months after a shop closure for your funds to be returned.

– All other digital products–please note that some of these types of digital items can only be downloaded once and may continue to be delivered even if you close your account. Please see this Help article about how to ensure no more deliveries .

– Sell on Etsy orders (orders placed through the app)–it is not possible to cancel an order when closing an account, but you are still responsible for fulfilling all outstanding orders. We recommend removing any remaining active listings from your shop as well as ensuring outstanding custom orders have been completed before closing your account. If you wish to stop using Sell on Etsy altogether, please contact us .

– Customized commissions–if you fail to fulfill commissions you will be responsible for any damages, including the cost of materials, incurred by your buyers.
