It’s time for a confession. You know those things you always said you’d do, but never did? Yeah, me too. I’ve been keeping an embarrassingly long list of all the goals and resolutions I made and then gave up on – probably like you have too.

But this year is different: it’s the year that we finally break our bad habit of making, then breaking goals and promises to ourselves! This post will tell you how to delete your circle (or as my friend calls it, your “circle of failure”) by following these three steps…

1) Figure out what went wrong with last year’s resolution(s) or goal; 2) Identify why/how the resolution failed; 3) Make a plan to keep this year’s goal.

Simple! Thank goodness it is that easy because let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger.

Now I know what you might be thinking…hmm…you say you don’t have your goal resolved yet? Well, no worries. Let me make it simple again – with the help of some awesome life hackers (i.e., best-selling author Neil Pasricha and Best Selling Author of The Happiness Project Gretchen Rubin ):

1) What do you want to accomplish in 2012? Break down this overarching goal into smaller pieces until they’re SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic/relevant, time-bound.

2) What is your WHY behind this goal? Why do you want to accomplish the smaller goals you’ve set for yourself?

In other words, what would having/doing/accomplishing this goal mean for you and why is it important enough to take an active role in achieving it? This helps make sure your goals are really yours – not someone else’s. The journey that leads up to a SMART goal will lead us right into step 3.

3) Make a plan. As Rubin says, “There is nothing more basic than making good resolutions and goals, but there’s nothing rarer, too.”

Fortunately, we live at a time when empowered with the internet (and its awesome life-hacking resources), we can start our plan off on the right foot. Here are a few great websites that offer some insight into goal setting and planning:

4) Take baby steps. Wait – you mean, I don’t have to do everything at once? Nope! This is what separates us from the THX 1138s of the world…we can take things one step at a time. In fact, many “life hackers” recommend taking it one day at a time. Acknowledge that there will be obstacles in our way and break big goals into smaller chunks so we won’t become overwhelmed by what needs to be done.   So with this tactic in mind, go forth and delete your circle of failure!
