How do I delete my Microsoft Team account?


To start, delete all other team members. Sign in to the Teams free org you want to delete, click your profile pic at the top of Teams then select Manage Organization. Click the X next to each person to remove them.

You can delete your Microsoft Team account at any time. When deleted, it will be permanently removed from all your devices. Deleting your account won’t necessarily remove you as a member of any teams or projects that you have contributed to. If you want to completely remove yourself from these teams and projects, leave them before deleting your account. Learn how to leave a team or project . We’ll also need confirmation that it’s really you making this request if we haven’t verified your mobile number with the account. This helps keep accounts secure even after deletion by requiring some additional information before removing an account. To complete the process, follow these steps: Sign in to Office 365 with the work or school account that has access to Microsoft Teams (or an account that you have been given permission to manage) and go to your profile. On the Settings menu at the top of the page, select Delete account .

You’ll be prompted with a request for verification before your account can be permanently deleted. Select one option on how we can contact you: If you’re near a computer, select Email me . We’ll send an email confirmation with instructions about deleting your account. This type of confirmation will also expire after seven days if not selected in time. If you’ve lost access to a computer or are otherwise unable do this, select Call me . We’ll call the number provided to confirm it’s really you making this request for deletion before deleting the account. Note : You may only complete this step from a mobile device. If you’ve erased the mobile number associated with your account, you’ll be unable to complete this step and will need to select Email me instead. Follow the instructions in the email or on the call​ for verification. You must verify this request within seven days of signing into Office 365 with a work or school account that has access to Microsoft Teams . Failure to do so will result in permanent deletion of your Microsoft Team account.

We’ll send an email confirmation once we have deleted your account information from our systems​. We may keep some data after deletion if required by law, regulation or court order, or where we are otherwise permitted by law or have reason to believe that there is a legitimate business need. If you receive any notifications about this, they will all eventually expire and be removed automatically. If you use a work or school account that has access to Microsoft Teams , your profile will remain in place for a period of time so that people can still contact you through the product’s other channels. We recommend using personal accounts instead of these work/school accounts where possible.

If I delete my Microsoft Team account, is there any way to get it back?

We’re constantly working on new features and improvements to Microsoft Teams . As we add more great stuff, this may result in you receiving notifications related to your former Microsoft Team activities even after deleting your account. Please note, however, that once deleted an old Microsoft Team account cannot be recovered; neither can any data associated with that account. If you want to start fresh, it’s suggested that you create a new Microsoft Team account.

How do I find out what happened to my data after deletion?

In order to protect the privacy of individual accounts and users, we will not be able to share details about any specific request or how deleted data is managed. We also can’t give details on why an individual request was granted or denied. This support article describes how Microsoft processes requests from users to delete their personal data (accounts and user content) in certain Office 365 services including OneDrive, Skype, Outlook.com and Microsoft Teams. It

does not apply to requests related to other Microsoft services.

For most Office 365 customers, a request for account and user content deletion is handled by the Customer Advocacy team . This article does not cover special cases, such as legal requirements or emergency circumstances that require an immediate response. Personal information stored within Microsoft Teams includes activity history : all messages sent or received by a user in channels, including chat records between users, message attachments and bot replies; screen sharing details: recordings of meetings where you shared your screen with others (but no audio); files uploaded to channels and channels themselves; and profile data : contact information such as names, profiles and email addresses of people in your organization.

How long does it take to delete my personal data?

We’re committed to processing deletion requests as quickly as possible while balancing our need for accuracy with the requirement that we protect the privacy of all users. We understand how important this is so we try hard to process deletion requests within seven business days . However, there may be a delay if: The account has not been used for some time for example, after someone leaves an organization or changes jobs; or Data associated with an account needs to be aggregated before it can be deleted (for example where multiple users share one Microsoft Teams workspace). In these cases, we will work with you or your agent to address any questions or concerns about the request.

Can I log back into my account after deletion?

No. Once an account and all associated data have been deleted, it is not possible to restore the data or recreate a new Microsoft Team account. If you decide that you want to re-use your email address in the future, please contact us . We will then process a simple verification process within 15 days . This is so we can verify this is really your information but it does not offer a means of recovering content already deleted from your previous Office 365 account due to deletion requests. If at some point in the future you want to recover content from this previous Office 365 account which was deleted due to deletion requests, please contact us . We will then process your request within 7 days . If you do not have any other information to help identify the appropriate account owner (such as an email address), we may be unable to assist.

If a business or individual is deleted from Office 365 services they will no longer exist in Microsoft’s systems and their data is removed from our servers:

Business users Email accounts associated with that user are also deleted

Non-business users OneDrive, Skype for Business, Outlook.com and Microsoft Teams accounts are also deleted Users must configure secondary email addresses in advance of deletion as these are needed after deletion for password retrieval or control of primary mail forwarding.
