How do I get a deleted email back?

Answer

  1. To retrieve the deleted email,
  2. Select the “Deleted Items” folder in Outlook.
  3. Click on the ‘Recover Deleted Items From Server’ button.
  4. A box will appear with your deleted items from Office 365 or Exchange 2013: it’s an inventory of what was there before you deleted it. You can click to recover individual emails, a group of emails, or all of them at once.

Short answer: You probably can’t.

The medium length answer: If you are a Gmail user, your messages are stored in the “All Mail” folder and that is where they will always remain and be visible to you unless manually deleted (a trick Google uses so as not to have their users delete things by accident). If you use any other platform, then it depends on what happens when an email account is deleted. In most cases it will simply result in the removal of the record of that account from your server, however there is no guarantee this will not still leave traces around your computer or even on a backup hard drive somewhere. Another factor to consider is if the person who had that email address created spam for others while employed by the company. Did they hack into other’s mail accounts to do it? If so, that could be a serious legal matter and I would definitely recommend you consult an attorney.

The long answer: First let me point out that the only function of each email account is for the person who owns it to receive emails at that address. No one else on earth should see those messages unless either (a) it was sent directly to them or (b) someone hacked into their account. As far as deleted emails go, there is no way to recover them short of setting up a new email address with a different provider and then copying your messages over from the old one…and even then you run the risk of missing any unsubscribes or opt-outs that may have been missed. If you did not do it, then I highly recommend you simply accept the fact that your previous emails are gone and try to learn from this experience so as not to repeat it in the future.
