How do I recover my old Xbox one account?

Answer

Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in, and you will be asked for a security code. When your account is reopened with this code, all of your games, music, etc., will become available the next time that you sign in to use your console.

I’ve tried all the solutions I could find, but there is no way to recover my old account. I am quite happy with Xbox one since it can run games at 1080p 60fps (on PS4 games are limited to 30 fps), but having both consoles side by side, this is a huge difference. Now it’s going to be even more evident as the new Sony console will also have a 4k support. This confirms that Xbox one was just rushed and Microsoft did not have time to polish everything before launching the console on November 22 2013. Apparently many features were added later through patches and updates, but they don’t work properly either. Other third party games do not work correctly because of these issues too: Smite had a problem where you could not see your friends and chat with them in party, Battlefield 4 had the same issue (I have a video demonstrating it on my youtube channel)…

The reason I’m writing this is that there are a lot of people like me on forums who also lost their accounts for various reasons and they don’t know what to do. This happened to me just two months ago. At first it was very frustrating but after trying every possible way, I gave up hope and decided to wait until Microsoft would release an update or something. However, no update ever came. So now I’m writing this article so that others can find it and try again if they too have lost their Xbox One account without any explanation from Microsoft.

Before I explain the steps you have to do, let me tell you some background.

I bought a brand new Xbox One console with Kinect, which was exposed to moisture on a rainy day. The box contained no information about this being a potential risk (other than the usual that liquids can damage your electrical goods), so after buying it and giving it to my sister, she decided to use it from her room through a HDMI cable for PS3. After half an hour the system turned off automatically, after turning it back on again nothing worked properly anymore: the screen would flicker randomly or turn completely black. But worst of all, my old profile was gone! Maybe because someone had changed something in its settings? This is what Microsoft support told me but I don’t really know. If you have similar problems with your console, make sure to create a new profile before trying anything else!

I tried numerous solutions found on forums and even contacted Microsoft support again (they were unable to recover my account when the problem occurred in August 2014), but none worked.

So now here is what you need to do:

1) First of all download Xbox One Smartglass app from Google Play store or Apple Store. Connect your mobile device with the same network as your Xbox One and sign in using the same account. Click on “Sign out” from your Xbox and then click “Forget this device”. This way it won’t be able to connect anymore unless someone else uses your account. You can do the same with Smartglass app on Windows 8/8.1 from PC or laptop.

2) Once done, disconnect your hardware and wait for a few minutes to let it disconnect completely (otherwise you will have to repeat this step again).

3) Sign in using the new account from which you want to retrieve your old account, then sign out again.

4) Go to www.xboxsupport.com/retrievepassword and enter email address associated with the user profile which was lost (you can make up a temporary email address if there is none; it must be an @hotmail one though). After entering their mail, they should send you an email with a code.

5) With your old account still in signed out mode, go to https://account.microsoft.com and click on “Add new user”. Enter the code you have received from Microsoft support and then sign out again with your old account (the email associated with this account should now be recognized as a valid one). This will create a new temporary profile but it will allow you to retrieve all the games downloaded previously… if they work! If not, try installing them through Games for Windows live or Origin instead of downloading directly from Xbox Live Marketplace.

6) Go back to www.xboxsupport.com/retrievepassword , sign in with your old username and enter the code given by Microsoft support. They should send you another email with another code.

7) Sign in again with your new account from the previous step, go to https://account.microsoft.com and click on “Add new user”. Enter the second code and sign out again with your old account (the email associated with this account should now be recognized as a valid one). Please note that after doing this, you will be asked to change the password of the new temporary profile which you have created! This way if someone somehow manages to access it, they won’t be able to sign in ever again without entering your password or using Microsoft support’s help!

8) Go back to www.xboxsupport.com/retrievepassword , sign in with your old username and enter the second code. They should send you another email with your login and password to be able to retrieve all the games downloaded previously… if they work!

If after all this, you are still not able to play your games, I am sorry! You have lost them forever but at least someone else won’t be able to play online with your account ever again unless they gain access to it through Microsoft Support (very unlikely).

How do I recover my old Xbox one account?

Do old Xbox accounts get deleted?

Inactive accounts are deleted 5 years after creation. Gamers sometimes keep their old account because they use it for Netflix or other services, not games.
