How do I temporarily close my Facebook account?

Answer

Select Settings > Privacy. Select Your Facebook Information in the left column and click Deactivation and Deletion. Click Deactivate Account to deactivate your account, then follow the instructions to confirm.

Reason: I am going to be in a remote place with no Internet access. I don’t want my friends worrying about me and thinking I’m dead because my status updates aren’t coming through! Better yet, maybe it’s time for some Facebook detox — the social network can be addicting so why not take a break?

Answer: Go to Account Settings > Security (this is under privacy settings as well). When you reach this page, click on Edit next to Deactivate Your Account. You will need to enter your password and then click Continue. Next, select how long you would like your account disabled for (14 days, 30 days or 180 days) and then press Submit. This action won’t delete your content but it will hide your account from the public. You can always go back to active status by logging into Facebook via your browser and going here.

How do I close my account for good?

Reason: I’m moving, switching jobs or some other compelling reason for a completely clean break that requires me to kill everything about me on Facebook.

Answer: The company calls this “deleting” but it’s more than erasing content in one fell swoop. Facebook uses the term delete because you have the option to reactivate your account at any time. Here is what happens when you click Delete My Account : All of your profile information is deleted from our servers (including name, username, email address, and so on). Your Timeline is not deleted (it stays up as a part of Facebook history); however, your name and username will be removed from it. Your account becomes inactive, meaning that no one can see it or find it in search. Any pending friend requests you have sent are automatically canceled. All the messages you’ve sent are archived. Friends who were tagged in photos with you during the past year will still appear in photos with you; after that time they will no longer appear since we do not keep photos once your account has been deleted. You cannot reactivate an account once it is deleted — but if there is ever a change of heart, please let us know.

How long does this take?

Reason: I’m just wondering how long will it take for Facebook to delete my account. Will I get a notice that it is done and when exactly?

Answer: It depends on the size of your account, the type of information you’ve provided, and how much information was captured by third party applications. Typically, an account with basic personal information can be deleted in 24 hours or less. If you have been using Facebook for work or for a business-related purpose (such as a fan page), the process may take up to seven days in order to make sure you don’t accidentally lose anything important. You will receive an email confirmation when your account has been completely deleted — but please be patient as this could take several hours.

Can I still access my account after deleting it?

Reason: I’m not sure but I think a friend of mine might have deleted his Facebook account. Can you confirm that he no longer has access to the site and all previous posts are also gone from the Internet? Will people be able to search for him using his name?

Answer: When someone deletes or closes their account, Facebook permanently removes the name associated with their profile and any content they have shared — including posts, photos, videos and other activity. However, if this is something you’re concerned with then please send him a message on Facebook (if he ever contacts us again we can remove information about him). Additionally, before anyone can see your public profile, they must have a valid Facebook account that is either associated with their own personal information or with the business, organization or school related to an event you’re attending.

Is my identity on Facebook forever?

Reason: I just want to know after I delete my Facebook account will all of my information still be stored and can it still be accessed by someone in the future years down the road when/if somebody decides to create another Facebook account using my real name? I’m asking this because even though I was active on Myspace back in 2005 and 2006, there are no records of me anywhere online anymore (I haven’t had an online presence at all since 2006) but if for some reason I still have to create a Facebook account in the future, will my information from 2005-2006 be part of my profile if I decide to use Facebook?

Answer: Based on our experience, once you delete your account all your information is removed. Also, keep in mind that nobody can impersonate another person using their name or any other piece of personal information because they must always submit valid login credentials when activating an account.

How do I delete my profile and permanently remove content about me from servers?

Reason: How do I completely close and totally remove it from Facebbok for ever with no chance to get back any info or details stored there – even after deleting the above mentioned data as described? How do you ensure that I am completely removed from Facebook’s servers and data base for ever? Can it be done so that at no time in the future can my data get back to Facebbok again? Please help.

Answer: To permanently delete your account, please visit this page (note that your account must be at least 30 days old before you can delete it). The process may take up to seven days but we will remove all information associated with your profile within 24 hours of receiving your request. You will receive an email confirmation once your account is gone — but remember that it will take several hours, sometimes even a few days, before everything has been deleted so please be patient. Also note that even after deleting your account, Facebook will still store some of your information in order to comply with applicable laws or valid requests from law enforcement (specifically, we’ll keep IP addresses associated with deleted accounts for up to 90 days).

Can I delete my groups?

Reason: I want to completely destroy all traces of me online, including on FB. Can I ask you to do this for me? If so how much would it cost and what does it involve? Could you send me the details via email please?

Answer: Unfortunately, deleting your groups is not possible. We suggest that if you upload any content through these groups such as photos or videos then you download a copy of them before deleting the group (you can do this by following the instructions on this help page).

Can I permanently delete all my messages and chat conversations?

Reason: Can you please let me know if I can permanently delete all my messages and chat conversations from Facebook Messenger including “Moments” of conversation history?

Is there a way to make sure all the personal info about me gets completely removed from Facebook’s servers & data base forever other than deleting my account? For example, could someone who doesn’t want to be identified anymore get all old content about them removed from Facebook’s data base? Please advise how this can be done.

Answer: If you mean that you’d like to delete something other than your account, for example some of the information associated with it, such as posts or photos, then we will remove it once you deactivate your account. You can also delete any information associated with an account using our Delete Account tool which means that it should be permanently and irreversibly deleted from our servers & data base — so please keep in mind though that if for some reason we need to access this information later on for technical reasons (for a legal request, for example), then we would have to save the IP addresses associated with each account as required by law.

If you want to remove all of the information associated with your Facebook profile, then deleting it will have no effect because we keep this data in backup copies. We’re continuing to work on new ways to delete this information but for now, deleting your profile is not the best way to do so.

How can I permanently prevent any future use of my social media?

Reason: How can I permanently prevent anyone from using anything on my social media and from having access to it (including FaceBook) The account has been deleted and could be restored at anytime if there is a legal reason such as fraud prevention or something like that – meaning that they would still have access to my social media.

Answer: Unfortunately, there is no way to completely delete your data from our servers & data base if we ever need to access it again for a legal reason. To be sure that this never happens, we suggest that you create a new profile (instead of deleting the old one) and then deactivate the old profile before doing so. The only thing left after that should be all of the information associated with your account which you can delete — see below for more info on how to do that or read our privacy policy for more details about what exactly we keep in backup copies after deletion.

I really want to permanently delete my Facebook account and remove everything associated with it forever – including my profile picture, name, number of friends and photos.

I’m not worried about my wall posts – I never friended anyone on Facebook that I wouldn’t want to see them again anyway.

But what I want help with is how to permanently delete all the information associated with an account (such as post details, date published & time posted), which for some reason doesn’t happen after you choose the option “Delete Account” in your settings.

Answer: Unfortunately, deleting your account will not delete any of the information associated with it — such as wall posts or groups — but we’re working on ways to be able to do this more easily in future so please check back later! For now though, you can try using our Delete Account tool instead and then you’ll only have to wait about a month before we delete all the information associated with your account.

If you want to keep some of these details, such as your name for example, but remove everything else like wall posts or photos, then this can be done by using our Delete Account tool too because it means that we will not save any of the information either in your account or on our servers (because email addresses are deleted too).

That u won’t start getting friend requests from it again even tho’ u’ve blocked it. Is this true?

Answer: If you block someone after deleting your account, then they are blocked from using any of your old account features — such as writing on your wall for example — but they may still be able to see the information associated with that account including things like photos.
