- Open WhatsApp and then the group chat which you want to delete.
- Tap on the options. Tree Dott.
- Select More.
- Tap on Clear Conversation.
- Tap on OK to confirm the deletion of messages.
Open the chat screen and tap on this cog icon:
Select Delete Group. Confirm by pressing Yes.
Alternatively, you can also delete WhatsApp group chats via your phone settings. Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Group Chat > Delete group or press-and-hold the chat name until a menu pops up at the bottom of your screen (see example below). Tap delete in this menu or to directly exit from the conversation simply untick all checkboxes and select Exit:
How do I switch from one group to another?
You can only have one active WhatsApp group at any given time. This means that once you leave a particular WhatsApp group chat, you cannot rejoin it for 48 hours unless there is an admin change in the group or someone else leaves.
However, this rule doesn’t apply to WhatsApp business groups which can be joined anytime without waiting for 48 hours. You can simply go to the Group Info screen (tap on the three dots > Info) and tap/press Leave:
After you leave a WhatsApp group, your profile pic will disappear from it but you’ll still receive all incoming messages. If there are no recent changes (like an admin change), as soon as 48 hours pass since you left the chat, your profile pic will automagically reappear and you’ll be automatically re-added back into that conversation.
If there are changes in an active group chat after you left it, then before re-joining it, be sure to ask if the admin or any other particular person remains in that group.
Is it possible to leave a WhatsApp group chat without exiting?
Yes, you can do that. Open any active group conversation and tap on this cog icon:
Select Leave Group (see example below). Confirm with Yes. A message will appear briefly informing you about re-joining the group later should there be changes like an admin change:
Alternatively, you can also leave a WhatsApp group by going to your phone Settings > WhatsApp > Group Chat > Leave Group followed by tapping Yes when prompted for confirmation:
What happens after leaving an active chat? Will I still receive messages sent from my contacts inside it? Why am I no longer able to send messages from that group?
You will still receive all incoming messages from inside an active group because you left it. You’ll also continue receiving your contact’s messages if those are sent privately through WhatsApp (see this article for more info). However, leaving a group won’t allow you to send any new messages from there:
WHY IS THAT SO? Because once you leave a WhatsApp chat, all members will be deleted from the ‘recipient list’ of your profile! This means that in order for you to be able to send messages again, they’ll need to add you back into the chat which could take 48 hours or so (if no changes occurred after your departure). And don’t forget what I mentioned above about not being able to re-join the same group conversation for 48 hours!
If you find yourself in a situation where you want to leave an active chat but continue sending messages from it, what you can do is add your contacts one by one as your recipients (see example below):
That way all of them will be added automatically back into the ‘recipient list’ of your profile without having to wait for 48 hours or anything else. Then, go ahead and message away.
Are there any alternatives to deleting a WhatsApp group & Can I hide it instead?
Yes, that’s possible. Simply go to the Group Info screen (tap on the three dots > Info) and tap/press Leave:
This will hide the group from your WhatsApp and it’ll be removed automatically from your Contacts list as well if no admin changes occurred after you left the chat. The downside of this method is that all active members will remain on your ‘recipients list’ (unless you’re using a custom ‘group recipients list’), which means that they’ll receive all new messages sent from there. Also, you won’t be able to re-join the same group for 48 hours until an admin change takes place or someone else leaves it.
The steps are as follows:
Exit the group if you haven’t already. If not, navigate to the Chat screen and tap on WhatsApp Settings and un-check Group Messaging option at bottom. Then exit WhatsApp. You should now have a Delete button which can be tapped for deletion of that particular group chat.
No. If you want to delete an advance or sent WhatsApp message, make sure that you press the arrow icon and choose Delete for everyone. The following is a sample sentence with unclear text: “I hope my new watch will help me be on time to work from now on”
1. Open WhatsApp and then the group chat which you want to delete.
2.Tap on the options. Tree Dott.
3. Select More.
4. Tap on Clear Conversation.
5. Tap on OK to confirm the deletion of messages.
