Is it possible to delete a Facebook account permanently?

Answer

To stop using Facebook, you can either deactivate or delete your profile. Deactivating your account removes all content and settings from view but leaves them in an offline archive. To actually erase everything, it is necessary to withdraw completely by deleting the Facebook account permanently with no possibility of recovery.

In your web browser, navigate to facebook.com/help Click the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of any page Choose the “I would like to permanently delete my account.” option From here you’ll need to select one of the following options regarding why you’d like to deactivate your account: Something on Facebook is problematic for me personally

If you’re not sure why you’re doing this and are worried that you might want access to it in the future, choose a reason that’s less definite like being concerned about privacy settings on your profile. We know, it sounds funny but it just makes sense when looking at what else is out there right now.

How long does permanent deletion take?

Facebook says it can take up to 90 days for a user’s data to be deleted.

How will my Facebook deletion appear?

If you have asked others to contact you through your Facebook account in the past two weeks and those people still have this information saved on their device, they may still see an option to contact you until your account is deleted. However, if it has been more than 14 days since anyone has contacted you with Messenger or shared any posts with you on Facebook using browser notifications, these options will no longer be available. Additionally, if someone tries to add you as a friend from your profile page they will receive a message that states: “This profile can’t be added because it doesn’t exist.” If you have one, your Facebook page will also disappear.

Will you still be able to see my Facebook account after it’s been deleted?

If you or someone were to search for your name, the search would show no results. Additionally, if you have a post that includes a tag of a friend (for example: #instagram #facebook #pinterest), these tags will not appear on your profile page after it has been deactivated. If you’ve selected to delete an account but only disabled it in the past — this data may still exist and be recoverable through our Download Your Information tool. Even if this data is deleted from our servers, it may still exist elsewhere. For additional information check out the below Help Centre article. If you have personal information about someone else on Facebook, we will delete it if you report it to us.

What happens to the people that I’ve connected with?

If your account is permanently deleted, the following may happen:

Events you joined: Friends and guests can RSVP at the event page until they’re notified that an organizer has canceled the event. Then, attendees can no longer see the event or join as a guest or attendee — unless they receive an invitation from a host with special permissions. After 2 weeks, the event page will be removed and any remaining events will not be visible in your friends’ Activity Log. These events cannot be accessed through Download Your Information. On Android devices, deleting your account may cause events you’ve RSVP’d to disappear.
