- Double click the account you wish to update.
- Select More Settings on the bottom left.
- Click the Advanced tab and make sure both options under Deleted Items are checked.
- Click OK and you should now be able to delete messages.

How to permanently delete emails in Outlook

I know how frustrating it can be when there are emails that won’t go away. During my time in the IT industry, I’ve talked with many customers who shared their frustrations about not being able to delete emails from their Outlook account. It is very common that an email will get flagged as read or unread even though it has been deleted long ago and they are unable to remove them from the list of emails in the inbox. This problem typically occurs because of folder settings; if the folder is configured to not allow items to be deleted, then the email may just sit there in limbo even after you delete it. Sometimes these emails will return if “reconnect” themselves with your mail account’s SMTP settings, but this isn’t guaranteed. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to completely remove these emails from your Outlook mailbox without some manual intervention on your part.
Therefore I propose the following procedure:
1) Go into any folders that might have unread/flagged emails (e.g., inbox or other primary folder). You can do this by clicking on the Home tab and then Chats > Show Folder List (see image below), or by using keyboard shortcuts for access to specific folders; pressing CTRL+6 will give you access to your default folders like Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, etc.
2) Ensure that there are some emails in this folder; if the folder is completely empty then you’ll need some email messages to work with (move some from another folder temporarily). You can either move an email or create one using a text editor like Notepad (for example) and save it under the name of “testemail.txt” – just remember where you saved it!
3) Select all of the emails in this folder by clicking CTRL+A on your keyboard. Right-click on any of the selected emails and choose Mark as Read . Now click No at the confirmation window that pops up asking you if you’re sure you want to mark the messages as read.
4) After you click No for the confirmation window, a new box will open asking how long you would like to keep these unread items marked in your inbox (see screenshot below). Click 5 days and then click OK . This will retain the emails in your inbox visible until they expire. It is very important that you select a date at least five days from today!
5) The next time your email client connects to receive mail, it’ll download all of the expired messages from the past five day period and delete them from your mailbox. Since these messages are no longer available on Outlook’s servers, they’ll simply get removed from your Outlook account entirely – problem solved! I recommend expiring messages for 5 days to give yourself some time to identify and remove any emails that you no longer desire.

If you’re unable to remove emails from a certain Outlook folder (not just specific messages), chances are it’s because the box is being used by a third-party program (for example, it may be scanned by an antivirus software). Restarting Windows should resolve the problem.
To permanently delete an email message, right-click the item and select Delete. To permanently delete all emails from the Inbox folder, type “delete” into the Search bar at top of Gmail window and then click the Start button. 1) Select Messages > Inbox to display messages in inbox. 2) Select All (or press + A if already selected). 3) Hold down Shift and Delete keys simultaneously after clicking OK. The items will be deleted immediately without showing any warning or error message onscreen; however, you need to confirm that you wish to remove each one before it is removed.
Double-click on the message to open it. Place the message in edit mode; Simple Ribbon (Microsoft 365) Select the ellipsis option. Type or remove any characters you want (I usually enter three spaces). Save and close the message. Try to erase the conversation again.

When there are no new emails in the Inbox: Right-click on Inbox and choose ‘Compact.’ Empty and compact the ‘Junk’ folder afterward. Compact the ‘Drafts’ folder. It seems like you may have some bug or corruption in your inbox, which is why these emails keep reappearing every time it’s refreshed.
Text messages stick around even after you “delete” them because to how the iPhone handles data. When you “delete” certain objects from your iPhone, they aren’t really removed. Instead, the operating system marks them for deletion and hides them so they appear to be vacant.
Go to Tools -> Options. Select the account you wish to use, then click Edit. Then go into Account Properties, select the deleted items folder, and tick delete options. Make sure you have a trash folder selected – even if one is chosen, make sure it’s deselected then hit OK to store it away.
Right-click on the folder in Outlook and pick Properties. Select the AutoArchive tab and choose this option for archiving the folder. Enter 180 days, or whatever period you want, into the Clean out items older than field. Select Permanently delete old things from the drop-down menu.
Select the first email in the mail list, then Ctrl + Shift + End keys simultaneously to select all emails, and finally press the Delete key in the Mail view.
Select each item and click Delete one by one. CTRL-click all the items you wish to remove and press Delete to delete them all at once. If the things are all lined up next to each other, select the first item, SHIFT-click the last item, then press Delete to erase both of them and everything in between.
Unfortunately, Android Messages does not support bulk deletion in this manner. Instead, you’ll need to long-press one message, then select the other messages and the garbage can symbol.
